Sound Letter

Sound Letter is an experimental documentary that investigates the sensory identity of the city of São Paulo. Far from following a conventional linear narrative, the film proposes a kind of sonic correspondence in search of the hidden music of the metropolis. Through the perspectives of Arthur Nestrovski and Eduardo Santos Mendes, the work explores the idea that inhabiting the city means superimposing distinct times, where the contemporary noise of traffic and urban chaos coexist with echoes of centuries-old traditions, such as old street vendors' cries. The medium-length film challenges the traditional documentary form by privileging the sound element as the protagonist and openly presenting its own recording apparatus, transforming the journey of a motorcycle courier into a true ballet of forms and sounds that translate the complexity and vibrancy of the São Paulo capital.

Peace Park

Professional skateboarder, David Boots has been following his passion for skateboarding at Peace Park (place de la Paix) for the last 20 years. PEACE PARK is his first feature length documentary film, which shows an uncensored insider’s perspective of the communities that frequent the park and their struggle to survive Montreal’s attempts to gentrify its red-light district. It explores the ways the city and corporate interests view the people in the park, and looks at the way the two communities (the lifers and the skateboarders) manage to share the space through tolerance and respect.

The film deals with classic values and taboo-like historical topics, and the method used is equally important as it gives an insight to the zeitgeist of the young today.

Invoking Justice

In Southern India, family disputes are settled by Jamaats—all male bodies which apply Islamic Sharia law to cases without allowing women to be present, even to defend themselves. Recognizing this fundamental inequity, a group of women in 2004 established a women’s Jamaat, which soon became a network of 12,000 members spread over 12 districts. Despite enormous resistance, they have been able to settle more than 8,000 cases to date, ranging from divorce to wife beating to brutal murders and more. Deepa Dhanraj follows several cases, shining a light on how the women’s Jamaat has acquired power through both communal education and the leaders’ persistent, tenacious and compassionate investigation of the crimes. In astonishing scenes we watch the Jamaat meetings, where women often shout over each other about the most difficult facets of their personal lives.
