Realce (Highlight)

Realce is a documentary short following two HIV-positive friends, DJ Deseo and porn actor Fernando Brutto, during one of their performances at Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival. The duo move through the streets of Rio and Carnival “blocos,” sharing their reflections on friendship, undetectability, their relationship with sex, and drug use within their own community.

A doc presenting portraits of four people unafraid to reveal their particular lifelong penchant for sadomasochistic practices: Altair, whose orientation links him to the world of horses, latex lover Fronéma, the provocative Lenka, and government employee Terezie.

Afrikaaps

In his debut documentary, Dylan Valley explores the untold Creole history of Afrikaans, using what he knows best: HipHop, humour and personal perspective. The film follows a group of local artists creating the stage production (or 'hip-hopera'), AFRIKAAPS, as they trace the true roots of Afrikaans to slaves in the Cape. The play, and the film, reclaims and liberates Afrikaans from its reputation as the language of the oppressor, taking it back to the people who own it. Features music from Jitsvinger, Kyle Shepard, Emile (black noise), Moenier Parker, Shane Cooper, Blaq Pearl, the powerhouse bboy, Bliksemstraal, and the poetic genius of Jethro Louw.

Emile Reynaud

The 8th short film as part of the Magica series dealing with pre-cinema. Fictionalised documentary about Emile Reynau who invented the praxinoscope and its system of central mirrors. He then projects his paper strips into the projection praxinoscope before creating the Théâtre Optique, presented at the Musée Grévin. The perforated strips are fragile and often break. The show is cancelled. Reynaud tries to apply photography to his praxinoscope, but without success. Desperate and ruined, he throws his strips into the Seine. Only two survived.

Nuclear Nightmares

Peter Ustinov hosts this haunting 1980 documentary exploring the world's nuclear weaponry and the fragile system that deters either side from initiating the first nuclear strike. Although the world's political climate has mellowed since the Cold War era, Nuclear Nightmares takes the viewer back in time to gain a perspective of what it was like to live under a very real nuclear threat.
