When They Left

When the colourful ice-cream van rides through the deserted streets of the village, there are no children trailing behind it. In Plazuela, a peaceful hamlet lost in a mountainous region of Ecuador, only a handful of old ladies remain, who are all widows. In the gloom of their houses, photos of those who are gone hang on walls: husbands who have passed away a few years earlier, children gone to work in the big cities or abroad, and grandchildren who have grown up far away from them.

Cassini's Grand Finale

To help visualize the dramatic final chapter in Cassini's remarkable story, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory produced this short film that features beautiful computer-generated animation, thoughtful narration and a rousing score. Producers at JPL worked with filmmaker Erik Wernquist, known for his 2014 short film "Wanderers," to create a stirring finale video befitting one of NASA's most successful missions of exploration.

Unwanted Cinema

The documentary shows the exclusion of Jewish film makers after Hitler took power in Germany and how this led to an independent filmproduction in Vienna and Budapest from 1934 till 1937. With previously unpublished archive material are portrayed: Hermann Kosterlitz (Henry Koster), Felix Joachimson (Jackson), Joe Pasternak, Otto Wallburg, Hans Jaray, Franziska Gaal, Rosy Barsony, Hortense Raky, Oskar Pilzer, Zoltan Vidor, Ernst Verebes.

Brave New River (directed by Nicolas Renaud) is a feature documentary exploring the paradoxes of our control over nature, the meeting between two worlds and the dilemmas of those taking part in the transformation of the land.

My Falling Sickness

Santiago has been unable to control his epilepsy for 28 years, dealing with the side effects of various medications. In 2010, he was hospitalized for three days in an attempt to induce seizures—to locate the point of discharge—and try brain surgery, but he was also deemed inoperable. At this point, Santiago decided to try something no one had suggested: accepting his body as it is, with its “abnormal” moments.

Beyond the Image

The film traces the history of the camera obscura, the understanding of perspective and anamorphosis, peepshows and it shows the beauty of historical shadowtheaters and shadow toys.
