Ideas of the 20th Century

In Ideas of the 20th Century, Dr. Daniel Bonevac examines the major intellectual movements that shaped modern Western thought. Beginning with the Scientific, Agricultural, and Industrial Revolutions, the course explores how traditional beliefs came under pressure, creating tensions between human freedom and scientific determinism and contributing to cultural and political upheavals. Through the ideas of thinkers such as Nietzsche, Marx, Freud, and the existentialists, as well as debates over totalitarianism, liberty, language, truth, and justice, the course traces the search for meaning in the modern world. By connecting philosophy, politics, and culture, it reveals how the central ideas of the 20th century continue to shape contemporary society and the challenges facing Western civilization today.

In 1944 many Germans in Eastern Prussia believed like Lena von Mahlenberg, daughter of a local aristocrat, that Hitler would surrender and spare them from being invaded by the vengeful Russian Red Army. He didn't and they had to flee.

Taganrog

The year is 1941. Viktor Shvets, a state security officer, organizes underground resistance against the Nazi occupation under the name of Gustav Schwartz. As a result of his activities, hundreds of people become part of the resistance, commit sabotage, distribute leaflets and prepare an uprising. Vasily Afonov becomes the leader of the underground.

Snapphanar

Snapphanar is a Swedish miniseries which aired in three parts on Sveriges Television during Christmas 2006, directed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein. The historical drama is about the Snapphane peasant rebel movement which fought against the Swedish rule of Scania in the 17th century. The "Snapphanar" was a rebellion people, who fought secretly for Denmark during 1660-1700. The miniseries were criticised by historians due to a perceived lack of historical accuracy. The Scanian nationalist attitudes portrayed in the series did not exist in the 17th century, and the term snapphane, which is used for self-identification in the series, was in fact a derogatory term used by Swedes.

The Aerobics Project

The deliciously upbeat Aerobics Project brings together a delightful concoction of disco music, female empowerment… and spies! The feel-good series swoops us back to the early ’80s, when the French aeronautics industry was just getting off the ground. A buff American Jane-Fonda type (who’s actually named Jane) moves into a sleepy Toulouse suburb and turns the community upside down by introducing a handful of local women to aerobics. First and foremost among them is her clever next-door neighbor, Karine, the frustrated wife of a local aeronautics engineer. Jane’s aerobics class is soon the talk of the town, changing attitudes and knitting together a sense of mutual support and female bonding. There may be more to the beguiling American than originally meets the eye… but the lives of all these women will never be the same again.
