Silent Waters

Still Waters is a documentation of the destruction in the Ahr valley six months after the catastrophic flooding in the summer of 2021. In the bleak environment destroyed by masses of water, the population clings to small daily activities that promise hope and consolation.

Água de Meninos – A Feira do Cinema Novo

Recalling the films "Sol Sobre a Lama" and "A Grande Feira", which portrayed the living conditions of Bahian society in the 1960s, the scenario was the Feira de Água de Meninos that was set on fire. Today the Feira de São Joaquim and its marketers live situations similar to those of the Cinema Novo films, in parallel they wait with hope for the beginning of the revitalization and expansion of the largest open market in Bahia.

Taurophilia

Through rhythmic re-composition of fragmented images, semi-surreal situations are explored in a documentary style of observation of a man's obsession with a powerful animal, the black horned bull, and the Spanish process of taxidermy through which he attempts to embody its beauty and strength, turning into a Minotaur. The subdued basement space in which the man meticulously studies the motionless flesh of the animal is preceded by a sunlit, empty arena in Spain, the stage in which the bull is presented in its full glory before facing man.

Spring in Carpathian Ruthenia

Karel Plicka was also cinematographer of this short movie. Editor in charge was Alexander Hackenschmied. There is an extraordinary emotional charge, every shot is working on its own, such as photographs, paintings and poetic complement intertitles in this short. From the perspective of nature and the perspective is shifting to the people and their habits, work and clothes. Peculiar documentary shots underscore Ruthenians (men, women and children) who are interested in looking into the camera and the curious "eye" showing off their habits.

When two different cultures meet in Hammerfest, Norway. The second is old nomadism based on a large annual cycle, another contemporary urban culture that has risen around the oil and fish industry. The collision of these two cultures is inevitable but absurd.

Escaping Riga

The film is based on true events, it tells the stories of two outstanding personalities of the 20th century – Sergei Eisenstein and Isaiah Berlin, who were both born and spent their childhood in Riga but soon had to leave the city. The film follows the lives of the two characters during the turbulent first half of the 20th century, telling how one of them becomes “the greatest film director of his generation” in the totalitarian Soviet Union, and the other “the greatest thinker of his generation” in liberal Great Britain.

Vanitas

To the sounds of a shifting collage of pop music, three dancing queer bodies move around sparsely lit spaces where fragile walls are falling apart. The transience of the walls, the vanity of the dancers, the chiaroscuro-lit images, and the title of the film take us back to the 17th century and Baroque painting, where the concept of vanitas was used for still lifes that referred to the vanity of life through elements such as fruits and flowers. ‘Vanitas’ is a musical dance work in a decaying, dreamlike world full of fragility and uncertain intimacy, in a constant alternation between being alone and being part of something.
