A young man watches a film. But when something strange occurs, he starts to doubt the world he's in.
The city is not a city; the figures are not quite human. Though these shapes with hands turned into weapons seem artificial, they were once men. These are inverted, deceptive silhouettes—beings whose eyes and ears have long been shuttered, drifting away from humanity, deceived by the gears and iron of that cold Glabah.
"The River" is a film that pays homage to culture and the experiences of women through the lens of Ethiopia and draws inspiration from the director’s childhood home, Kebena. The film not only celebrates the art of beauty, but will also highlight the systemic barriers women face in the context of forced marriage, education and water access.
The story centers around a family dinner. The mother organizes a birthday meal for her younger son. However, the father arrives late, and the daughter is distracted by her phone. As dinner progresses, each family member's hidden worries begin to surface. Conversations become increasingly intense, and tensions escalate when the son inadvertently reveals the father’s secret plan to change jobs.The situation grows chaotic as truths unfold. The family try to finds a way to finish the meal together, despite the emotional strain.
The romantic comedy follows Soluchi, a hopeless romantic still healing from being jilted by her former lover, Kalu. When a regular work call puts her in touch with the charming Eli, Soluchi begins to see the possibility of the love story she has always wanted.
